What will be

Where we are at the moment and what will be after? At least we know the present and try to plan the future. Time will tell how well our plans work out.

We havent played live since July 2010. Right after that gig the summer holiday season started so we had some time off. Then we gathered for rehearsal and agreed that we will focus on making a CD. It ment that we played the songs during 2-3 training sessions and then recorded us live with a Zoom H2 (Juha played drums with a headphone click).

Next planned step was to record the drums in our rehearsal site. So Juha started his recording sessions. He made some microphone tests with his two drum sets (it took quite awhile) and now he has done most of his part. Meanwhile our weekly practise sessions came to a four week stop because Markku caught a flu and was not able to sing at all.

After Juha has done his drums we'll make rough stereo mixes of the drum tracks and start to work simultaneously in two (or three) sessions. Matti has a home studio so the guitars and perhaps vocals will be done there. I am not sure where Petri's bass will be recorded (in his house perhaps). I will do the keyboard parts here (at my house). Perhaps I'll do also my backing vocals here but another possibility is to do the singing at Matti's or in the house where Supernormals practises. My backing vocals should be done in sync with Markku's and Matti's singing so it may be difficult to do vocals in separate sessions.

We don't have a release date for the CD. That does not mean that we will record and re-record the tracks and polish the mixes forever. After all we do rock music! On the other hand we don't spit the CD out before it is properly done. It'll take a few months because we have our daytime jobs to take care of. This session comes second (or third or fourth...) in our personal priority lists.

We have thought that we don't play live gigs during the recording session. This is not a strict rule. If an interesting gig opportunity is offered for Supernormals we will take it. An interesting gig opportunity is not the usual "Come and play in the corner of our bar. You'll get drinks for a discount and some money (almost certainly less money than the band spends for gasoline in order to reach the scene). And hey, did I mention that we'll expect seven customers fot that night!" ;)

When the CD is out we'll do some giggin'!

What has been and what is

For a start you should know that it has been almost 20 years since I (Harri Lahtinen) got out of school. Because I was born and live in Finland I don't speak or write english often. There will be typos and grammar errors but I suppose I do OK.

About the band. For a start Supernormals was a four member group. As far as I know Markku Rytivaara (vocals, guitar), Matti Mikkonen (guitar, backing vocals) and Juha Seilonen (drums) have been playing in Supernormals from the start (200x?). Petri Laukka (bass) was asked to join the band in autumn 2007 because the previous bassist resigned. In summer 2008 the band asked me to join the band as a keyboard player. I agreed and so the band turned to a five member group.

I had my doubts about my keyboard playing in Supernormals. Actually I am a lot better guitarist than a keyboard player. I had done only one gig with keyboards in the late 1980's and have never been rehearsing keyboard playing (proper fingering etc.). When I was asked to join I did have one keyboard synth and two synth modules for demo song recordings so it was easy to jump in for a try. The band was not after a virtuoso because I am still in :) I think my strongest point with synthesizing is my technical approach. I am quite good with computer HW and SW. Guess that goes also with synth programming. I do read the f...... manuals (Roland should learn to make proper ones) and spend hours learning the beasts.

The current Supernormals lineup made it's first live performance 2nd of August, 2008.

We all have our daytime jobs. You know that hobby costs and so it is with Supernormals. We do gigs now and then for fun (not for money because we don't earn that much) and to keep our focus sharp. We rehearse usually once a week. Sometimes our jobs deny us our weekly rehearse session. If there is an upcoming gig or some other need we may gather for rehearsals more often.

I'll write "What will be" shortly.

Creating Supernormals band blog

Hello everyone!

My name is Harri Lahtinen. I am playing keyboards and doing backing vocals in a Finnish indie rock band called Supernormals. I have just started this blog. Since this is my fist blogging experience there may be some hiccups. My plan is to let all the band members do some writing here. They may elect not to write but that's their problem ;).
